What is a lock rekey?

Rekeying a lock means changing its keying to work with a new key, while leaving the lock cylinder intact. This is done by altering the internal mechanism, typically the pins or wafers, so the old key no longer operates it. Rekeying is a common practice when a key is lost or stolen, when someone moves out of a property, or when a new homeowner wants to secure their property.

Why is my lock hard to operate, or not locking at all?

If key doesn’t turn smoothly, or at all, you may need a lock rekey giving you new pins while keeping the same key.

A strike plate adjustment may be needed, more common with deadbolts coming out of alignment due to movement of doorway caused by temperature changes.
